The case moved slowly through the courts and Jones eventually pleaded guilty to the crime in 2006. The man was not physically injured in the encounter. Oklahoma City Police alleged Jones pointed a gun at a man in a new Mercedes and demanded the keys to the vehicle. Jones’ attorneys say it is misleading to characterize Jones as having a violent history since he was never convicted of a violent crime prior to his arrest for the murder of Paul Howell.īut prosecutors charged Jones with robbery with a firearm in September 1999 (after he had been charged with Howell’s murder) for a carjacking he had allegedly committed prior to Howell’s slaying outside an Oklahoma City pizza restaurant. The Frontier fact-checked some claims about Jones’ case using court documents and other records, as well as information provided by Jones’ attorneys and the Howell family.Ĭlaim: Jones had a history of prior violent criminal offenses before the murder of Paul Howell. Some of the public debate has centered around things like Jones’ college academic record and reports of alleged gang activity, although neither is proof of guilt or innocence. Many facts of the case are complex and nuanced and others remain unknown. Myths and misconceptions have persisted as Jones’ case continues to draw intense media scrutiny and a groundswell of support from activists and celebrities. Stitt’s executive order prohibits Jones from seeking further clemency, pardon, or parole, but some observers have said that a future governor could reverse the order or Jones could seek relief in court. Questions persist about Jones’ guilt or innocence in the 1999 murder of Edmond businessman Paul Howell and whether he received a fair trial. The solution in this case is =SUMPRODUCT(N(A1:A37=”Subtotal”),B1:B37). That’s pretty cool too! But this could also lead to an error if somewhere in column A the word Subtotal were misspelled, or contained a space at the end (“Subtotal ”)!Įach array must be a numeric array. OK, what is SUMIF? It’s a built-in Excel function which works like this: Wherever the first range (A1:A37) contains the word “Subtotal”, add the values from the 2nd range (the 3rd parameter). This doesn’t look much shorter, but it’s pretty much the same size no matter how many cells are involved. One down side to this technique is that it won’t work on a range which is horizontal, only vertical, as this one is. Wow! That’s cool! Excel “finds” all the other Sum formulas and picks out the correct cells! Not likely to produce an error! But there’s no hunting for the correct cells to use. While the cell B38 is selected, press Alt/= (that is, hold the Alt key down and press the = sign). The first way is probably the easiest, but the formula is perhaps just as long. In this article I’ll describe a few alternative ways to do this, leaving the best for last! It does work, producing the correct answer, but it’s tedious to do and certainly subject to errors because you might click the wrong cell. I’ve seen formulas like this many many times, and often a lot longer because the list is longer. ![]() How many of you would use the formula =B3+B9+B14+B20+B25+B32+B37 to solve the problem? The formula in cell B9, for example, is =SUM(B4:B8). But what is the formula which goes there? Notice that there are several subtotals in the list. Suppose you have a worksheet which looks something like this:Ĭlearly, what’s needed is the grand total in cell B38. This method is also applicable to horizontal ranges, making it a versatile solution for different worksheet setups. This works because each subtotal is a sum of individual values, effectively counting each value twice. The simplest and most efficient method to calculate totals in a list, including subtotals, is to sum all the values and divide by 2.It requires numeric arrays and can be used with the N function to convert TRUE/FALSE values to 1/0. SUMPRODUCT is another Excel function that multiplies ranges or arrays together and returns the sum of the products. However, it can lead to errors if the criterion is misspelled or incorrectly formatted. SUMIF is a built-in Excel function that calculates the sum of the values in a range that meet a specified criterion. The Alt/= shortcut in Excel can automatically find all other SUM formulas and calculate the total, making it less likely to produce errors.Basic Excel functions such as SUM can be used to calculate totals in a list, but this method can be prone to errors and tedious if the list is long.Learn different methods to calculate totals, including the use of SUMIF and SUMPRODUCT functions, and discover the most efficient way to avoid errors and long formulas. While with KISS the solution shall be as simple as possible, YAGNI asks the question if a solution is needed at all. This is a fun one! From junior dev to principal engineer: everyone can become the victim of over-engineering or scope creep Simplicity should be a design goal: do you need a class when a function is sufficient (compare Pythons unittest with pytest) YAGNI(Y) – You ain’t gonna need it (yet) This principle was coined by Clarence Johnson who was an aeronautical engineer. I think it should be the other way around: these techniques are guilty until proven innocent in the court of KISS.Īs developers, I think we also tend to be far too optimistic in assessing the generality of our own solutions, and thus we end up building elaborate OOP frameworks around things that may not justify that level of complexity. Most programmers never met an object they didn't like. You laugh, but like Rico, I see this all the time. Use fancy OOP features because they have specific, demonstrable benefit to the problem you're trying to solve. So when I say things like "don't use a delegates if regular polymorphism would do" I don't mean that you should avoid delegates I mean that you should not use them if they are overkill.ĭon't use fancy OOP features just because you can. Whatever programming religion you may have I think you'll agree that more complex language abstractions do not inherently help your design – rather each more sophisticated feature starts at a net negative and must somehow earn its way to positiveness with benefits such as clarity, ease of maintenance, performance, and so forth. But, as often, I find that people have written their code in some elaborate way when a much simpler model would have been equally servicable and more performant. Far from it, often they not only add clarity and maintainability they also improve performance. This is not to say that you should shun virtual functions, inheritance, or other features of modern programming languages. If I was to summarize my advice in that blog in a few words it would be "don't use OOP features that you don't need."
